Red Rose Care offer palliative care services across Preston and the surrounding areas for families and people looking for a compassionate and quality end of life home care service.
In this blog we explain what palliative care is and how it can help a person at the end of their life, and their loved ones.
What Is Palliative Care?
When a person is given a terminal diagnosis, they have the right to choose where they want to die and what care or support will make their final weeks, or years comfortable and dignified.
For some people, this is in a hospital, a care home, or hospice but for some, this may mean they want to live out the time they have left at home in familiar surroundings.
Palliative care is caring for someone at the end of their life but may involve nursing, practical care, and help – such as bathing, dressing, and feeding. Palliative carers will also provide emotional support to the individual as well as their loved ones.
Palliative care is an extremely delicate service where the approach must be tailored to a person’s wishes to ensure they spend the last part of their life in a dignified and comfortable way.
End of life care can be an exceedingly difficult period not only for the person experiencing it but for their loved ones too. Any professionals involved in palliative care must therefore be experienced in these situations and be able to emphasise with the individual and their families.
Palliative Care At Home
Coming to the end of life doesn’t always mean it happens in a hospital – some people will be informed no further treatment is available, they may choose not to receive further treatment or treatment may be provided to try and prolong the end-of-life period, reduce pain and discomfort.
Some people choose to spend this time at home or at a loved one’s home, where they are comfortable in the knowledge they are surrounded by family and friends.
Medical treatment may still take place, but this will usually be administered by district nurses, carers or sometimes family members.
As this period can be distressing and tiring for everyone involved, a great deal of support and practical help is often required to ensure everyone is coping as well as they can be and most importantly, that the individual at the end of their life is comfortable and is receiving care in the way they wish to.
