Caring for complex illnesses can be hard. If a loved one is suffering from a complex illness we understand you want to do all you can to make sure they are well looked after.

Complex care patients, also known as high need patients, need specialist care and treatment tailored to them and their specific needs.

What Is A Complex Illness?

A complex illness can occur when a patient has more than one illness and have multiple illnesses that need treatment. This is made worse if the illnesses are serious and can interfere with each other.

As you get older you can find it harder to fight off certain illnesses and diseases. On top of that, old age can come with illnesses and ailments that can conflict with other illnesses your loved one may have already, especially if it something they have lived with their entire life, like diabetes or high blood pressure.

Hospital admissions from 2016 showed that around 1 in 3 people are living with complex illnesses. Some of the most common complex illnesses included people living serious illnesses such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, mental health condition as well as managing at least one other additional illness.

Whilst it is more common for complex illnesses to occur in older people, they can affect younger people too. Especially if you have an illness that you have had since childhood and then develop an illness such as cancer later in life.

Complex illness can affect anyone and they will need specialist care to help manage all of their illnesses and make sure they are safe and taking care of themselves properly and efficiently.

How Do You Care For A Complex Illness?

Complex illness can be very complicated and hard to treat. If you or your loved in is currently living with a complex illness you will need to discuss with a doctor to decide what is the best option. Be honest with your doctor about everything you are suffering with.

Your treatment and medication will have to be tailored to work with all the illnesses you are living with. You or your loved one might require more hands-on, specialised treatment, especially if you have one or more serious issues.

It is possible to care for complex treatment at home but you will likely have to become a full-time carer to help look after your loved one. This of course can be incredibly stressful, epically if you are not medically trained and are having to learn about these illnesses as you go.
